Gun Holsters Questions & Answers

I purchased a leather-holster but my handgun doesn't fit. What should I do?

Leather can shrink and expand depending on temperature and moisture. Above all, you must ensure you are maintaining your holster with the proper treatments. If you have a brand new holster that is too tight for your firearm, please follow these instructions:

Ensure you have the right holster for your firearm by verifying the product SKU with its compatible versions on our site or the site of the manufacturer. In addition, review the manufacturer's warranty to ensure it will not be violated in any way.

If you do have the correct holster, empty and clear your firearm and place it into a thick plastic bag to prevent any rubbing or transfer of oils.

If you haven't done so already, you should treat your leather holster with the proper conditioner or oil at this time. Next, work the firearm into the holster using little twisting motions as you work it in to help stretch the leather.

Once in place, leave the holster to set with the firearm in it. Leave it to set for at least 24 to 48 hours.

What exactly does a Holster's Retention Level mean?

Retention level, generally speaking, is used to designate the number of locking or retention devices that are being utilized by the holster while the firearm is in place. For example, a level (1) retention holster will have a single point of retention, a level (2) will have a second point of retention or, more commonly, a locking mechanism that must be manually disengaged before the firearm can be drawn from the holster. A level (3) retention holster would have 3 points (usually a retention point, and two locking points) and so forth. In many models alike, the level (2) component actually doubles as the retention point as well as the locking points.

What are the advantages and drawbacks of a leather holster?

Leather is generally more comfortable, it has the ability to breath, and it's more stylish. However, it does require maintenance, it can rub on the firearm, and it doesn't hold up to drastic abuse. Please visit our Product Pros & Cons for additional details and information.

What are the advantages and drawbacks of a Kydex holster?

Kydex or in most cases even Plastic-style holsters are very rigid and sturdy. They require minimal maintenance and can withstand heavy abuse; creating considerable safety measures on their increased holster retention levels. However, a downside to consider is that they are rather bulky and more difficult to conceal, can be cumbersome over long periods of wear, and if broken, are generally unrepairable.
